Our location on the eastern borders of Cumbria gives us good access to many diverse areas of northern England, each with its own particular character. We are within the Yorkshire Dales NP boundary and within a few miles of the Lake District NP making us an ideal centre to visit these two well known National Parks. We also sit midway between two designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty – quieter, lesser known, but equally picturesque, regions. To the north lies the North Pennines AONB encompassing Weardale, Teesdale, Alston Moor and South Tynedale, with their characterful market towns, high sweeping moorland roads and stunning views in all directions. To the south is the Forest of Bowland AONB a smaller, more secluded area with sleepy villages within the Royal Forest and Trough of Bowland.
Each area offers its own brand of stunning beauty and contains many visitor attractions both large and small. Here are just a few we recommend.
Locally
Good for red squirrel sightings... St Oswalds Church – last church where a sanctuary bell was used to escape capture and execution, and one of only three in the country with pews facing inwards towards the central isle and a three tier pulpit …. Gilbertine Priory Ruins... small art gallery... two pubs – handy for a mid-way pint if doing the circular walk from The Fat Lamb... Bessy Beck Trout Fishery (in neighbouring Newbiggin on Lune).
A small busy market town with an active sheep and cattle market... shops and cafes... historical trail... Stainmore Railway Company with steam trains and restorations... local riverside walks

High Force, Britains largest waterfall by volume, situated on the road from Alston to Middleton in Teesdale... Killhope Lead Mining Museum… Blanchland, a medieval village in Northumberland, and particularly the drive that leads to it via Brough, Middleton in Teesdale and Stanhope – high moorland roads with steep ascents and sweeping bends that just keep opening up in front of you, and views (on a good day) all the way to the north sea. Superb driving.
Slaidburn and The Hark to Bounty Inn... the road through the Trough of Bowland from Dunsop Bridge to Quernmore... Thank you for the friendly welcome and great service we received last Sunday.
We had completed a long and very wet walk in Bowderdale and turned up at the pub hoping for refreshments. We were very well received and the hot tea and scones were just what we needed.
Regards,
Elaine
